Keeping Luke out of trouble

We had to put the baby gate up again between the kitchen and dining room, and keep Luke out of the kitchen completely. The final straw was when he got into the fridge, managed to get the childproof cap off Lexie's antibiotic, and dumped the entire bottle onto the kitchen floor. What a sticky, pink mess. Thank God he didn't drink it!

He is able to bypass a lot of security and baby-proofing techniques; he is too smart for his own good! He reaches his hands inside the kitchen cabinet and unhooks the latch to open the door to the pantry.

We need to install a hook and eye on the outside of the bathroom door as well as the inside. We like to keep Luke out when we're in there; sometimes it's nice to have a small amount of privacy in the bathroom. We also need to keep him out when we're NOT in there. He loves getting into my makeup, hairspray and feminine products.

He really loves the Christmas tree, too. He helped us decorate, and enjoys taking the ornaments down and putting them back on again. When he has trouble hanging them back up he just throws them on the floor. There's about 9 ornaments all over our living room. Oh well...

We used flip over hotel style locks on our doors up high since our son was able to defeat all the baby locks - and we used a heavy duty velcro strap to keep the door of the fridge shut! He had his own cupboard in the kitchen that was all his to play in and we just disciplined him until he would stay out of the others - though there was nothing dangerous in them just in case - those locks kept me out more than they kept him out!!!
We had a dead bolt on the front door but he figured that out at 17 months and was strong enough to open it. He walked out in front of a cement truck but by God's grace, was not badly hurt. We installed two locks on every door and window - one down low that he was sure to figure out and one up high that gave us a little time to try to stop him. When we sold our home we had to work hard to convince the folks who bought it that it wasn't a high crime neighborhood - we were just trying to keep our son safe and out of the road! They were not fluent in English and had a hard time understanding such a busy little boy!
Sounds like your Luke and our Storyteller have active imaginations!

We've had problems with both boys escaping out the front door. When Avery was 17 months old, he went out the door, across the street, and was playing with the neighbor's garbage cans. A couple months ago, Ethan opened the door while I was in the shower, and then Avery shut the door and locked it. Thank goodness the bathroom window looks out to the front porch & I heard him crying!
Our in-laws gave us those hotel-style flip locks for the doors, too. They use them on the door that goes out to the pool.
I haven't figured what to do about the fridge yet, either... For now, yelling works :o)
